Fewer places conjure up more snug, winter, images than the state of Vermont. I don’t know about you, but when I picture snowy, log cabin, BLISS I immediately imagine eating a carb-centric breakfast in some cozy digs. If you’re looking for a restaurant that just feels entirely like you’ve stumbled onto the scene of a Hallmark Christmas special, then it’s pretty freaking important to add Sugar and Spice to your foodie bucket list.
The charming, idyllic, wood-clapped cabin sets a traveler’s heart ablaze before they even sit down to eat. Its simple and classic country design is always a reminder that I’m somewhere special and far from home, disconnected from the traffic congestion, grueling NYC work ethos, and high dizzying buildings. When I’m fortunate enough to visit Sugar and Spice when they’re been a pouring of snow recently, oh baby. My heart flutters damn near out of my chest. It’s the most spot-on portrayal of a winter wonderland.

Sugar and Spice is an all-day breakfast joint housed in an authentic sugar house. The menu and gift shop (which is extensive as hell) boasts a ton of maple syrup which comes directly from the trees on the property. Tapping the trees for syrup takes place in the spring, and if you happen to visit during that time, you can even watch the staff boil the maple syrup directly from your table.
This place is an absolute institution and you’ll find everyone from snowboarders and skiers, to families, to couples honeymooning inside of the place. The menu is utterly dizzying, but who doesn’t love options? Sugar and Spice is infamous for its pumpkin pancakes and French toast. If you want the ultimate ski trip breakfast, try the pigs in a blanket. They’re far from average and the hotdogs come wrapped and baked inside golden pancakes.
The sausage gravy is the kind of hearty meal one really should try at a rustic, homespun, place such as this. Sugar and Spice has been around for quite some time and has used only locally sourced ingredients before it was even en vogue. But, don’t go thinking this older dog can’t learn new tricks. Each time I visit, there is always something new on the menu. On the last visit, I tried a “Hawaiian omelet” which included ham and PINEAPPLE baked into eggs with cheese. It was one of the greatest breakfasts that I’ve ever enjoyed.
